Faux painting describes a "look" and includes wall finishes that mimic other materials such as wood, stone, or wallpaper, but are composed entirely of paint. Techniques to achieve these looks include sponge painting, color washing, glazing, and stippling. Click any example for a closer look, or click here to see how ShimmerStone™ can enhance your decor.

Kitchen Island Makeover

This kitchen island with the black granite top was a remnant of the previous homeowner’s taste in light wood tones. The client wanted to make it her own. She wanted it to blend better with the rest of the kitchen.

Taking cues from colors in the surrounding speckled granite and the concrete mantel on the adjoining family room’s fireplace, she selected taupe and warm charcoal gray. ShimmerStone was chosen as the medium because of its great looks and durability. To insure accuracy, a sample board was ordered. When finished and approved at the next meeting, the work was ordered and scheduled. (See photo below)

The finished piece not only really looks sharp, but also goes with some of the owner’s other art that hangs in the same room.

Customized Bathroom Cabinet

The clients, in this charming home in Portland’s Concordia neighborhood, had the cabinet built to go with a recent bathroom remodel. It was a plain boring white MDF with a paint ready surface. They approached me to do something with it to make it go better with the surrounding finishes in this small upstairs master bath.

The cast concrete countertops and unique stone sink were focal points. I suggested ShimmerStone because of its durability and versatile good looks. Beginning with the colors and textures present in these two features, and combining them with the colors already on the wall and in the floor tile, I came up with an idea, and a sample board was created. (See photo below)

After submitting the sample board, I was given the go ahead. Layers of tinted ShimmerStone were toweled on to develop a rich texture, which was then sanded to a smooth, and polished satin finish. The completed piece is a real improvement to the room and integrates beautifully with the space.

Golden Powder Room

The walls in this incredible room are coated with layers of yellow-orange ShimmerStone applied with a trowel. This artistic space has a unique cast bronze pedestal sink in the shape of a tree trunk. The pebble-tile floor is heated underneath and the art-glass light sconces above the sink add a warm glow. There is also a special stained glass ceiling fixture that features amber hues and deep copper browns. The combination just glows like embers in a campfire.

Showroom Kitchens

The walls in this Kitchen vignette at the new Standard Appliance Showroom in Beaverton were done in this versatile product. The colors were custom blended to match the tile and to co-ordinate with the cabinets.

The second kitchen vignette features ShimmerStone custom-stenciled in the exact scale and colors of the tile used in the backsplash of this designer showroom kitchen. The background is a blend of colors to suggest stainless steel or silver leaf. It’s a wonderful treatment to use with contemporary styles and has a very Zen feel.

Kitchen Backsplash

Kitchen Backsplash in Faux Slate Tiles

The backsplash in this kitchen was boring and needed an update. I had seen some really nice slate tiles installed in a friend’s home and really liked the look. I thought, “why not try those in ShimmerStone?”

First I applied a basecoat of grout color in an off white to match the floor. Next the grid lines were taped off using 1/8” fine line tape. Then, a coat of Aqua Stone by Faux Effects was applied for texture. Next, using a pallet knife, the individual tiles were rendered using custom mixed ShimmerStone, (with real slate tiles for reference).

When the tape was removed, it revealed a beautiful faux slate tile that gave the kitchen of this 60’s ranch an update to tie in with the new charcoal gray laminate countertops and the white marble patterned vinyl floor.

The cabinets are still original and are waiting to be refinished.

Entry Hall

The walls below include a front entry, a hallway and a partial wall between the kitchen and living room in a lovely NW Portland condominium. A small powder room with some custom stenciling was also added to the project. ShimmerStone was applied over previously painted walls that had a standard “orange peel” texture.

The designer, the client, and the artist all collaborated in choosing a color that would work well in the space. Because of the open design of the kitchen, it had to also look good with the adjoining living room.

The focus was on the random texture in a soft neutral color. The finished effect is of very high-end satin wallpaper. An advantage over paper is that is can be cleaned and repaired if needed and even sanded and painted over if desired. No messy and expensive stripping needed. The color can also be modified or “tweaked” at a later date if the owner gets tired of it.

Fabric Inspired
Sample Boards

The following are a few of the sample board I’ve created. Swatches of designer fabrics that were chosen because of their visual impact and richness of color and pattern are the inspiration behind them.

Using a fabric from your décor, I can custom design any ShimmerStone surface from exact match, to coordinating blends or contrasting hues. This gives your walls, furniture or other accessories a one-of-a-kind look you’ll love.

Metallic
Faux Finishes

Dining Room Ceiling
The coffered ceiling in this newly built home in Lake Oswego was given a special bit of luxury by adding a metallic glaze in between the wood beams. The color was chosen to go with the walls, the fabrics on the window coverings, and the beautifully stained and finished woodwork throughout the house.

Designer: Elizabeth Stanton.
Featuring paint by Devine colors.

Bedroom Wall
The accent wall in this master bedroom was specially designed to act as a focal point to the room. The colors were selected to bring in touches of the glass tile accents in the master bathroom next to it. The brownish bronzes, antique gold and copper tones were expertly blended to produce a unified finish that is the perfect finishing touch.

Kitchen Ceiling
This kitchen ceiling in a private residence in NW Portland was taken to new heights of extraordinary beauty with a special metallic glaze treatment featuring ShimmerStone mixed with Modern Masters metallic copper and gold tones. It plays off the copper accent pieces that the client collects and adds just the right touch to this beautiful kitchen.
