FURNITURE

Furniture is another fun area to explore with customized decorative painting. Watch a very basic hutch go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Custom Painted Hutch
The piece was primed white, then base-coated in a taupe color selected by the designer and the client. Next, a coating of ShimmerStone was applied over the piece to give it an aged texture and a silvery finish. Next the bevels and reveals were painted with an accent color of metallic warm silver. Afterward, the bird and flower designs were hand-painted on the door fronts by the artist back in the studio.

Finally, a dark brown glaze was washed over the piece to bring out the depth of the carving and the texture of the ShimmerStone finish. The finished piece is a one of a kind work of art that will be a treasured by its owner for years to come.

Sideboard Redo
The next piece features a custom painted sideboard designed to look smashing in a designers own home dining room. Interior Designer Jane Hoffman enjoys color and taking things up a notch. She knew that the “plain-Jane” sideboard that she bought for her dining room had potential, so she called on me to help. (See before photo)

We begin by selecting a deep brown with less orange in it. We used the wall color and the patterns in the carpet to inspire the design. I suggested a raised effect to add dimension.

The design was first developed on sample boards. (See photo at upper right) I used custom-cut stencils and ShimmerStone tinted in a color from the carpet to create the embossed effect. A deep brown glaze over it accentuates the embossed effect and gives the appearance of aged carving. I also added some texture that gave it a distressed look and helped to give it places for the glaze to show.

She loved the sample board and with a few minor adjustments, I proceeded to apply my artistry to the piece. The finished piece looks perfect for the room it sits in and the “gold leaf” detailing adds the extra sparkle and class that Jane’s work is known for.

Custom Headboard — from boring to breathtaking

This headboard (see before picture to the right) was delivered in the wrong color for the client’s décor and was not available in the color she needed. A custom painted finish turned out to be the perfect solution to her dilemma.

By carefully combining the colors of the satin bedspread and the fabrics of the drapes and pillow shams, we were able to select a custom color match that would work equally well with both. A sample board was ordered to present the options to the client for approval. (See picture below)

Then, after priming and base-coating the piece, I applied a couple of coats of ShimmerStone in the custom matched shade. Several steps were involved including some “gold” leafing and antiquing. A wash of deep black/teal brought out the unique characteristics of texture in the finish. The gold leaf mimicked what was already there, but with a much warmer tone to blend with the client’s antique picture frames and other accessories in the bedroom.

The final result is stunning! (See after picture lower right)
